TheIcebreaker

I just had a flash of inspiration again, so i decided to make this weapon. An axe that fits to undead, fallen, maybe faceless ones and eventually Nerubian creatures. This model has more polies than most of my other attachments, but therefor it has some unique desing patters.

The Icebreakers were once forged for an elite group of death knights. Rumors say that this group of death knights set sails from the frozen lands with the aim of reaching main cities of humans for turning them into ice cold strongholds of the Darkness, but the fleet got caught in a deadly storm. What happened to the crew and ship remains a mystery but these axes where scattered around in the icy continents. No one realy knows what materials had been used to make these axes, but one thing is for sure: they contain many frost, ice and dark essences and elements. Even the simple grousome appearance is enough to cause fear among some enemies. The fiendish blade easily penetrates most armors and causes serious damage. It also inflicts frost bites to the unfortunate target(s). For unarmored victims a single blow can be more than enough to kill them almost instantly. The weapon also has the ability to store the souls of its victims and empower its enchants with them. Another advantage of these axes is that they give the wielder enough power to use them at almost any level. There are very few heroes and creatures which carry such an epic axe. Some weapon experts even categorize them as legendary axes or even artifacts, as there exists only a very limited number of these. Many blacksmiths tried to copy them, but they never managed to get an exact dublicate with the exact powers and qualities. This brought a rumor to life that claims they've been forged in the coldest place of Void itself. Which is true or wrong about the making of these axes can't be determined anymore as no one also knows who or what was involved in their creation.



******IMPORTANT:******
by downloading this ressource you receive 2 models: the actual model is the attachment version and the portrait file. The portrait file (should be named ''TheIcebreakerItem_portrait'' or so) isn't a real portrait, it's just the item version for it. It should be imported as TheIcebreakerItem.mdx, not with the ending _portrait.mdx.


Feel free to use both models in any imaginable way, including editing, if desired. No need to ask me for permission. Have fun with them! :wink:


EDIT 1: made the skulls between the blades new from 0 and also lowered a bit the poly count of the axe's blades. Filesize has been slightly decreased, but not hte quality. :wink:

The file size is quite ridiculous; I really think this could have been pulled off with the same visible results with less polygons.

It doesn't help that you include the portrait, making it look even more hideously huge.

The actual attachment is 62 KB, which is still pretty huge, but at least it is of acceptable quality. I strongly advise that you remove the item version and then put a link in your post to a download for the item version, because the 130 KB file size of both combined will discourage many people from downloading it.

It does look really awesome, but I feel like you did this pretty lazily; you could easily have made it look just as good without nearly as much file size. You use lots of polygons and wrapped high-quality in-game textures to it, so the good-looking result is not surprising, but with more work you could have easily saved a lot of KB's.

One place you should definitely look for reducing file size is the skull, which looks very simple yet uses an enormous amount of polygons, with the highest polygon-density of any other part of the model. You really should simplify the skull, you could use quite literally under 30 polygons on the skull and still have it look the same.

You could also consider taking a couple segments out of the handle and then just scaling up the X-proportion of the leftover segments to fill the gap.

Until you find a way to reduce the file size, I'm going to have to give it a 4/5. I know, I know, the quality, it looks really nice, but file size is important too. Anybody can make something look good if they have no limits. Stick in 8,000 polygons and have a 1000 KB shield, it will look really high quality, but the skill is in efficiently using the file size to make something look good without having to be huge. Don't get me wrong, I still really like this, hence the 4/5 which is not a bad rating, but for a 5/5 this will need to either lower its file size, or look better without increasing the file size; either way, the quality needs to match the size or the size needs to match the quality. The good looks are pretty big, but right now the file size is even bigger.

You can definitely get this to look just as good with under 50 KB, most likely even with under 30 KB with a lot of work. If you can get it under 50 KB and still look this good, that's all it will take for a 5/5 from me.

Edit: Good job lowering the poly count of the skull; for such a tiny piece of the model, it didn't really need the ~200 polygons that that tiny piece alone had previously contained. This is much more useful now that you have lowered that file size, and here is your 5/5!

Well i'm thinking of making some changes in it.
Additionally, why should i put an external download to it? :eekani: If one downloads it onto the HDD, it's the same space....and for using it ingames ditto.

Nice weapon :3 ! "Head Cutter" ! Cause it will cut heads.

But you could decrease the size, although it isn't TO big.

I reduced the filesize a bit already, especially with the skull as mentioned. And yes, you're right about the ppl.....i should know it by now that the majority doesn't read discriptions. :vw_sad: Thx for your help & feedback. :ogre_haosis:
 
After your epic axe, and the epic axe that will most likely be coming from KayS in the future, even though I finished that college assignment's work I'd been busy with, I'm not so sure I even want to make the double-sided axe for my set right now, it won't look as good next to these.
