A dummy unit is a unselectable, invisible unit you use to make spells or abilities (If you have played DotA, Elune's Arrow is a dummy unit). Dummies are manipulated through Triggering. They can be used in conjunction with the Channel Ability, which provides a huge amount of options for dummy units. You can make your dummy cast a channel ability while you hero can move and attack still. If you get more advanced, dummies can be used to cast a spell on multiple units in an area (such as Sleep).

The Zone indicator could be used as a dummy unit. For example when you cast silence in an area, You would then create 1 zone indicator for every enemy unit with a range of 300 of the ability being cast and give that zone indicator the spell sleep and order it to cast sleep on the picked unit. That way you not only silence the enemy, but they are also asleep.
