The Offical Reformation Thread can be found here at x767.
I have begun work on a new diplo map. The time area of this will be set 1517-1550 when the Protestant Reformation took place. The map will have major 6 teams, Protestants, English, French, Catholics, Ottomans and Habsburgs.
Two wars will be fought at the same time, religious and martial. A review of the player is something like this:
Protestants: Led by Luther, a reformer, their goal is to gain the love of the people and their devotion. With no military strength until Shmalkaldic league, and after that very little, the protestants fight what seems to be a hopeless war. Their goal is not domination though but to convert catholics, first in Germany then across the world into Protestants.
English: Led by Henry VIII England is carrying on like England normally does. Henry is having Marital problems and it seems like an heir is unlikely to be born. The English have a powerful military force, and later game they often side with the Protestants over catholics depending who is the successor to Henry.
French: The French are catholic, and allied no one at the start of the game. The French have no clear goal, but to gain glory for the Kingdom and its king. One option that they have is to "Build the Chateaux" for the glory of their King Francis. The French have multiple kings throughout the game.
Catholics: The catholics goal is to stop the Protestant religion from spreading out of Germany and into the surrounding area. Traditionally they are allied with the Habsburgs, and their Holy Roman Emperor. The catholics have a small military, and control few cities. Many Popes cycle through in the course of a game.
Ottomans: The ottomans are busy at the start of the game in a war against Hungary which they are sure to win. After the succeed then they automatically declare war on the Habsburgs with no hope of peace. The ottomans are also often troubled by Persia. They control the sea using Pirates to gather resources.
Habsburgs: The Hapsburg main goal is to hold the Ottomans at Vienna. If they succeed in this the world is indeed, their oyster. Allied with the Pope, they are the Holy Roman Empire. The French border can be invaded, but it all depends on the situation.
Persia: Persia is there to trouble, the Ottomans. With limited forces and a home, far away the Persian player fights a battle of guerrilla warfare and subterfuge. The Persians have easy to achieve victory conditions, but a small force with which to do it.
Scotland: Scotland has limited power of its own, but the potential for very powerful allies. It can choose either the French, or the English to join with.
Hungary: Fighting for their lives against the Ottomans, they turn to Hapsburgs for help. They fight a losing war in the start of the game ans their sole goal is to stay alive.
Genoa: A naval power the Genoans often loan out their prowess on the seas to other powers (Papacy, French and Hapsbursg) to help defeat the Ottoman pirates. Limited land military.
Venetians: Reside in Venice and tend to be allied with the Pope. The Venetians control a sizable force of infantry.
Ireland: The Persia of England, the Irish trouble the English with revolts and upset. The Irish launch raids against the English in hope of claiming independence.
The first six powers are th "Major" powers, with the largest global influence on the game.
The religious aspect is separate from the military until later in the game when the Protestant get real troops.
Systems, such as Income are going to be determined my population, and taxes, except for the religious for whom it works in much the same way, but they are called Tithes instead p)
The terrain is going to cover the whole area around the Mediterranean, and all of Europe.
On my recent camping trip, I have has some time to think and I refined my idea a little.
Victory Conditions are going to be based on certain stats.
For example what the English need to win is:
85% morale or higher.
10 surviving units.
75% of homespaces Protestant
and some others.
The conditions differ per player so the smaller players have an equal chance of winning.
There will be few types of units.
Light, Medium and Heavy Muskets. - Beats Pikes
Light, Medium and Heavy Pikes. - Beats Cavalry
Light, Medium and Heavy Cavalry. - Beats Muskets
Light, Medium and Heavy Cannon. - Beats Cities
Each of these units will have two forms, Regular and Mercenary.
Regulars - Are raised from the native population of said, country/empire/religion. They are very loyal and do not desert.
Mercenaries - Are paid troops. Mercenaries require gold to work for you and they will stop fighting if you run out of gold. They are known to desert and switch sides.
Why Conquest is not the sole answer:
You can NOT raise regulars or hire mercenaries at captures cities and keys. They must be built in home spaces.
There is NO benefit of capturing enemy cities, only their keys.
It is HARD. Unit around cities will get something like a X2 armor bonus.
So please give me thoughts on the map, and any ideas.
