Starcraft was originally going to run on the Warcraft 2 engine. (That las picture was a screenshot) Many people didn't like it and made fun of it by calling it names like Warcraft Goes Purple and Warcraft in Space.

based on what i read, blizzard had to build a new engine to get everything working as they wanted. before that they tried to use the warcraft 2 engine. there is also a starcraft 1 mod that restores the older models.
