[Spell] Spinning Wards

You can make your unit spin constantly by adding a "spin" tag in Art - Required Animation Names in the object editor.

If you want to make it start or stop spinning on command, use the action Animation - Add/Remove Unit Animation Tag in the trigger editor to add or remove a "spin" tag.
 
Do I need to use a specific ability as the base for this?

No, you just add it as an animation tag directly to the unit in the object editor as so:
