ok, make a spell based on a 'unit-target-spell' for example 'purge', remove all effect so nothing will happen. if the spell would be cast.
Create a new Unit based on the footmen and call him dummy add him with 'locust' ability, remove his soundset and set food cost to 0. Go to Art - Model file and set the custom path to '.mdl'.

now the trigger:
  • Event
    • Unit - A unit Starts the effect of an ability
  • Bedingungen
    • (Ability being cast) Gleich 'the Spell based on purge'
  • Aktionen
    • Unit - Create 1 Dummy for (Owner of (Casting unit)) at (Target point of ability being cast) facing ?
    • Unit - Black Arrow to (Last created unit)
    • Unit - Set level of Black Arrow for (Last created unit) to (Level of (Ability being cast) for (Casting unit))
    • Unit - Order (Last created unit) to Dark Ranger - 'Black Arrow' (Target unit of ability being cast)
    • Wait ??? seconds
    • Unit - Kill (Last created unit)
something like this, my WE is german so there could be some translating mistakes in the trigger.
