reviews for AI generated icons

from viewing the icon section, it seems that the current policy is that only icons in the regular section and the HD section get reviewed and the other types just get left as pending (none of the AI generated ones have been reviewed, and the ported ones are backed up more than 100 pages..). It's possible the moderator just has a long to do list, and in that case this whole post is irrelevant.

If indeed this is the policy I want to argue that AI generated icons deserve to be reviewed. Generating relevant and accurate images is not a given, it takes time and know-how, with very large variance in results. Especially for icons in wC3 where there are pretty clear parameters of what make an icon good and useful in game.

If the regular icon section was only for things that were drawn from scratch, I would understand the reluctance more, but a lot of the icons in the icon section are touched up screenshots of models. I am not minimizing the effort put in to making those, but I think a comparable amount of personal ability is needed to create decent icons with AI (I don't just mean slapping a BTN border on anything you generate), and IMO they are not less original than a screenshot of an existing model (even though that is the time honored tradition ).

I just typed in "night elf magic spell" into an AI icon creator, and it made this, which is pretty decent quality in my opinion.

If there is a list of icons that need reviewing, maybe AI generated icons should be at the end of that list, since it took me 3 seconds to generate that icon above. Those 3 seconds were just me typing in the key words and pressing "generate".

I am not saying people who make AI generated icons don't deserve their icons to be reviewed, but priority should 100% be all the other icons in the pending section. Just my opinion.

To answer this as a "Long story short" answer.. i am the only "mod" or "reviewer" for said section and once AI icons got into the hive i was not really aware that they either needed to be moderated or reviewed. As so, its generated art and therefore is not freehand involved here, so for every icon in the section would you just want me to approve them once they upload them or how would you wanna work that @Ralle ? I like the idea of AI icons but i feel like people would abuse that as you can simple just type whatever you what like the comment above me and it makes a icon in seconds.. and, i feel the section would become flooded in moments.

I do agree, it somewhat goes with what i was talking about in my other comment. I do not mind reviewing any type of icon i just left that section be because i wasn't really sure how to go around it being its just me and no moderator at all.

With that being said, @Ralle i know your busy sir but what sections would you want me to review and how would you like for me to review them? Since im aware of the rules in the main icon section im not sure if that applys to the other ones as well, being reforged.

I think the "skill" I was talking about in generating these comes with the specification. the tool @tulee showed has built in prebaked specified prompts for several art styles (including "video game icon"), which allow people to get pretty good results that match the genre easily and quickly. while this is great, the more specific you will try to get with what you are trying to do - the more you have to actually futz with the prompts, and that is where it becomes more of a skill, and requires more effort.

Maybe a solution to this could be having slightly different/more stringent criteria for rating these. Maybe that they need to fill a specific void that wasn't filled yet by regular icons. or maybe just being more stringent about them being "on brand" with wc3 icons, and obviously that they look good and legible shrunk down in game.

alternatively, if judging them is not practical, maybe have a different category to slap on them then pending, or just not have those tags show on them at all. or maybe no one else cares that they are perpetually pending and I should find something more useful to be annoying about.

I feel it would be an unnecessary strain on reviewers. I propose either leaving them Pending or adding a special status automatically once they are uploaded, like AI or something.
It's hard to compare Ported with AI Generated because the first focuses on functionality and optimization for Warcraft III while the latter would be under the critique glance of icons which IMO is not needed at all since drawing and conceptualizing an icon is vastly different than writing some text and maybe doing some post editing to get your lottery icon/picture.
But if you truly feel the urge to have a sort of validation, I propose two things to choose from to ease the reviewer's work: Approved and/or Rejected, no quality measure.

That being said this icon as with the others like it are not warcraft style nor seem to be useful for anything but another game entirely..

I agree, i also dont really agree with them being bigger size than the 64x64 size but i guess since they have alot of details in the picture it needs to show it i suppose..
I think the review should mostly go on how much it looks like a Warcraft icon or not. And I don't think the HQ and DC ratings are applicable here.
Yes i do agree because there are some right now that are not very warcraft style like these ones,

And for me i would just reject them being that are not that style at all>?

Well bigger size would be for Reforged. What was it 256x256?

IMO, they don't have to be Warcraft style but fitting to the game rather. It's a bit complicated to define but think it of like how some models are higher poly or in an artistic style that is either less blocky or simply not Warcraft (III) but still useful and great for total conversion modding.
