Replacing ingame assets? (Icons, model textures, etc.)

Hi. I vaguely recall being able to replace rifleman's texture by creating folders corresponding to the pathfile of the original texture.

Is it also possible to do that with icons? It's a minor nitpick, but I would kind of like to replace some of the icons in the game, since some buildings use different team colors compared to the rest, new hero icons lack the glowing border, some such as Tinker seem like placeholder, etc.

If it is possible, could some provide a brief guide on how to do this? I might be doing something wrong, but it seems like icons cannot be replaced the same way textures can?

They should be, you just need to follow the same directory structure ReplaceableTextures -> CommandButtons

The folder thing sounds a bit awkward to me, it's much easier to just replace them in the map asset manager
Are you talking about the import manager? Because I meant replacing the assets for the entire game, not just custom maps.

I think in another post someone mentioned some types of assets being unreplacable due to them being transfered (or however you want to call it) from the mpq file no matter what you do

It sounds like local files would be a good option for you (what Chaosium is describing above^). They'll basically let you put assets in your Warcraft III folder--and as long as the folder structure and file names match the paths in the wc3 archives, it'll replace that asset when you run the game. There's a great guide on it here!

If it isn't working for you from the get go, it might just be that you need to update the registry to allow local files (this gets explained in the tutorial above).
