Having trouble finding the lever, even reading books etc but no help.

Also what's with the 4 circles in a line near the troll dungeon? And what on earth are the 3 tombs doing behind the magic door?

One of the Bookshelves speaks of a Mechanism hidden within Pipes. You can find the Pipes near the Master's Chamber. (Use Inspect)

Also what's with the 4 circles in a line near the troll dungeon?

They are part of a puzzle related to a Legendary Item - Sigil of Al'ar.

And what on earth are the 3 tombs doing behind the magic door?

The Magic Door is opened by a Lever which is nearby, but hidden in plain sight.

And I found the lever for the tombs but they were empty?

If you are playing v2.3.2, there was a bug, yes.
It's been fixed in 2.3.3 though.

I take there is no way to keep a old toon in a new map update

Not that I mind starting again, it's damn good fun!
