Redoran's Retreat

This bundle is marked as useful / simple. Simplicity is bliss, low effort and/or may contain minor bugs.
"This region is named after the famous Redoran, the first bandit to have forged an alliance with the ogres, gnolls and trolls. The valley is home to numerous such bandit mercenaries that will not hesitate to spill blood in the name of the highest bidder."

*****UPDATE!*****
- kept poison and purge, removed ensnare at the expansions by switching the 2 troll trappers and the gnoll assassin with a poison spider. The cc is now easier, but still tricky to micro
- compensated the reduction of the xp from the expansions by changing the central wolf camps: added 2 more wolf pups and changed the drops

*****UPDATE #2****
- fixed item drop for wolf camps

Hello! I am Kenny and this is the first wc3 map I've created in over 3 years and I am very glad to have found that the community is still alive and kicking! I created this map as a contribution to WTii's youtube channel where I have been entertained for quite a while now.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the map! Comments, critics, suggestions - much appreciated! :D

Here's a little info about the map itself:

- map name inspired by a Skyrim dungeon with the same name
- 4 player map, good for FFA, 1v1 or 2v2
- high ground expansion close to your base that incorporates a merc camp to fit the map's idea. This high ground can be accessed from your own base if trees are chopped.
- many green camps, some brown and just 1 red creep camp, all with balanced items (many power ups and no super items)
- 2 goblin labs @ 12 and 6 o'clock
- 2 goblin merchands @ 3 and 9 o clock
- 4 central gold mines only accessible by clearing trees
- no marketplace or fountains for balance sake
- twisting paths through the forest
- landable high ground by the corner expansion's gold mines (might not want to tell your opponents that :D)

well, that's about it... have fun!! :D

Your Map has low quality terrain.

Personal Comment:
Map is way to green. That means a lot of grass tile + trees.
You should use cliffs or rivers to randomize map pathing more.
Because when late game come, bases will be open to enemy ground forces from all sides.
Make neutrals acquisition range to Camp (200) so they don't attack nearby player units.
2 Granite golems are way to much to handle, use 1 instead.
Drop artifact pls.
Swap tavern and mercenary camp location ;)
Do not resurrect hostile units, such items are not melee recommended.

Map Status: Rejected
(1/5) Unacceptable

hey man and thanks for commenting!
well, this is meant to be a melee map so I don't think I'll be adding new races to it, at least for now. Although, I do have a couple of old races projects still around :)

And I'm not sure what you mean by credits.. :p

edit: is there something wrong with it? why can't you play it?

yep, it's 100% melee :)
if any credits are due, I guess Blizzard for making the game and the new modern maps because I did take a look at what goes for a "pro" melee map these days, watching the chinese pro-scene and the ladder maps :)

What I liked:

***
-good starting locations
-enough resources
-terrain tile is quite decent
-terrain level, cliff and up and lower tool
-creeps and good loot system
***

What could be improved:

***
the terrain and the doodads can have more work, but is okay for me, i marked in red some areas to sugest more work

Hey Kenny.

I sent you an email with my thoughts regarding this map.

I've come to say great work & thanks very much.

I shall give it a rating too. I give it 4/5 because unless it was perfect I'd find it hard to give anything 5/5.

Positives:
-Theme of the map is strong & shows
-There is a multitude of potential events between players due to terrain & doodad (trees, etc) placement that could result in entertaining games
-The high number of twists & turns a player could choose to take depending on how they wish to navigate the map allows a less linear & more open style of gameplay

Negatives:
-Dire Wolf item drop needs improvement
-You could also "slightly" reduce the levels of the Corner Expansion Creep camps (lower difficulty of mobs - poison mob + purge + 2 ensnares could be very harsh for an early expand in particular)

no screenshots? I'm dying here. Hey, here's another tip. To take a nice terrain screenshot - zoom out in WE and press [cntrl] then roll the mouse button. Ooooooh. Look at that, you can now see the whole terrain from above. Now press [Fn] + [Prnt Scrn]. Ok, great now open "Paint." Then press [cntrl]+[v]. You should have a screenshot in your paint program. Crop the edges, we don't need to see WE interface, we know what it looks like. Now save in your folder (I call mine "screenshots"). Now you are ready to upload to your description and show off your wonderful new map you worked so hard on. Ready? Ok, now go to your Hive profile and open "Albums" and click upload. Select the file you saved to your folder, whatever you named it, and click upload. Great! Now you have an image in your album. Right click the image and select "open image in new url." Now copy the url and go to your map. Click update in the top right hand corner. Ok, here's where it gets a little tricky. You need a real simple peice of BBcode or the url will just appear as text... ready. Here it is [img]www.terrainscreenie/sweeeeet.jpg[/img] see how you add the [img] to the beginning and end with the [/img] that will make the image appear rather than the text. Then click the terms and conditions [I agree] (this proves your not a bot and you understand the rule about no porno) then click save. Your done!!!! Your map description now contains a screenshot of the whole terrain in hi-res. It looks great and everyone can see your terrain without downloading the map (which if they are like me, they won't do unless they can see a screenshot).

Please understand, I know you're new and if I seem frustrated, its not your fault. I have just seen a bunch of maps rejected over the last few days and I'm really trying to help out. I want to see a nice description on every map. It doesn't have to look amazing but it should have some format and be at least something more than text. Of course there is no rule that it can't be just text but ... why would you want it to be? I hope these links help out. +rep for submitting your first map!

With the risk of you dying, I'll take a chance and not add screenshots :) It's a melee map, no custom interesting models or scenery, just standard blizzard terrain editor. Hope you're not too disappointed, my friends aren't! :)

ouch a rating of 1! someone must be upset with me :D no, I don't think it's absolutelly necessary, thanks for commenting though :)

edit: would love some more suggestions and comments on the map itself btw rather than just whines about not adding freaking ss of the map. You can open the editor with any Lordaeron Summer tileset map you know and see what such a map looks like.

It's necessary :
Map Submission Rules by Vengeancekael said:
Submitted Map Resources need to have a good description on the Hive. Map title, author, features list, short gameplay explanation, a credits list, screenshots, a changelog, etc.
A map description that only contains "Hope you like it, my first map" or "power core v3 new updates, see loadingscreen good map" will be rejected.
I've bod the Screenshot word for you, take a look on it.

Off Topic:
I don't think the map deserves a 1/5, since the rating is based on the map quality, not the description. The description is about giving people information, this does influence whether it is accepted or not, but SHOULD NOT influence a result. You should have still taken the time to download the map, and had a look at it, instead of giving him a low rating.

While you are trying to help him with the description is good, but to me by you not even mentioning the map and complaining about screenshots gives me the idea that your reviews are done off screenshots, not the inside map. So do not rate the map, till you look at it in the editor.

On Topic:
Also I shall look at your map later, and give feedback when I get home from school

Fair enough. However, the rules do require a description with screenshots. I normally download a map if I review it. This was not a review. It was a rating based on the response I got. So you're right, that's not fair. 3/5 to even it out. If a map is just terrain and there are sufficient screenshots it can be reviewed on screenshots alone. If a map includes systems of any type, it must be played and not just viewed in WE or screenshots. I just saw like 4 maps get rejected and I felt bad. I don't want to see it keep happening but people need to help themselves. I apologize for the rating. The links I posted are useful, anyone who has not already should read them. Also, I trust abgm's review of the terrain. I'm sure its decent.

my response was in the same tone as your sarcastic post, which even though helpful, was arrogant and made you look like a dick, since that was your first interaction with me, someone you've never talked to.

And I'd like to add my opinion to this discussion. I may be new, but I don't think ANY map should be rated based on screenshots, not even by opening it in the editor, but ONLY by playing it, especially melee maps. Because no amount of screenshots will be able to tell you how a melee map feels and plays.

Also, you get the header (screenshot of the editor mini map re-sized) with all the mines, friendly buildings and starting positions, which is 10 times more useful than the map editor ss you suggested and I still think it is not needed.

thanks everyone for the feedback! I'll add more doodads today when I get a chance :D

cheers

How about a youtube video? :) jk

Again, my apologies. My attitude wasn't based on anything specific to you, it was based on the trend of crappy descriptions followed by swift rejection that had me stressin'. lol, and ya, I totally looked like a D!(k, helpful maybe, but a D!(k nonetheless. Anyway, good luck.
