I started designing the terrain for a massive ORPG a while ago. I really wanted the environment to stand out amongst other ORPG maps, but the more I work on the terrain the more dull and ordinary it looks to me. I was thinking of starting over and working from a different perspective (like perhaps designing it for a 2nd-person view).

I dunno, i'm split. Thoughts/suggestions?

The Terrain isn't dull at all... Maybe the 2nd one and the Tiki Village, since they could use some work (especially the tiki village), but It's very nice and I'd love to see the rest.

I know your feeling, after some time of working on the same terrain tiles you get bored with the effects it gives. The only thing I could say would help you with this feeling is make a lot more variation in the ideas for each area, which basically means more detail than should probably be allowed in a map. You could do that, or you could try and variate the tiles less, and have more variated regions of the map.

It looks great, but try and work on the complexity of the cliffs and the rocky hills that should surround them.

Yes, if anything you should work on covering the rock tiles with... Well... rocks. Especially the places where the rock tiles are tretched. Like they are in picture number 4 on both sides of the mine, you've made a steep cliff without covering it up, which gives a bad effect to the terrain.

I can see what you mean about it being dull, it's very... Standard, in terms of environment. Even if it is very good layed out, and very good terrained. You probably want to make something a little more fantastic and magical I assume? If I were to suggest anything on that note I would say use what you already got and change that up, make the atmospher different, use some other doodads, tint your already existing doodads to match the new atmospher and so on.

Hope that could be of some help to you.

Something that might enhance a magical look is spell effects. Try out some by stretching, tinting, rotating and whatever sees you fit. Other than that, I really like some of these. Make sure you follow everyone's suggestions, I really think this has potential.
