Need environment doodads. Trees, rocks, shrubs!
One way to help a terrain like this would be to place rocks and shrubs around the buildings. Maybe an oasis outside would also look nice! Or mountains/hills so it doesn't look flat and boring.

Your other work was better.

Everything around the encampment is pretty much completely empty.
You lack mixture of tile-variation. I'm able to tell what is mountain/hill/flat ground, but I'd like to see more different types of dirt mixed together with dirt on roads, different types of grass mixed with other grass tiles, etc. It helps make your terrain look a lot more alive and keeps it busy. Causes the illusion that it's cluttered with variations.
So far you're decent at lifting/lowering doodads, so that I appreciate so far in your terrain.
You need a lot more environmental doodas to be placed. Perhaps place rocks on the mountains or steep hills and grass here and there. Trees would probably look good as well. Even though it's a barren environment, bringing life to the terrain is certainly necessary.

It is hard to get barrens right, keep trying though. Look at mine, IMO it's pretty good.

i guess the barrens can use some "dead life" so heres the new screens. (added another part in the back and the lake/waterfall/water spout)

Much better! Although you still need to work on height variation. Never leave anything flat. Just take a larger sized brush and raise the ground randomly by 2-4 clicks, if that makes sense.

I guess not. Picture ten for example. The dirt all around the water is flat, or at least flat looking, generally ground is not flat (there are exceptions of course).
