They aren't, after the 256x256 area is extended, the side it is extended to will have its pathability map messed up. For example, you will be able to build on rocks. That's the only issue I know, though, aside from possible lag due to some things.
I think that is pretty much it: pathability is no longer taken into account when bulding. But this may or may not be a problem, depending on whether or not you actually use building in the map, and os on.
Usually means more units = more data processed at the time = movement (and issued orders) lag. This is a serious issue. 480x480 is playable, its really fine, my current project uses a 480x480 and I don't get any delay with the loading time and lag in-game. Also sotp uses 480x480 even though the terrain is not yet done.
