OK I have litteraly been on this site for 3 hours trying to find out how to start making my own custom skins. I have GIMP, I just need a few different ways to do the whole thing and in high detail that even a noob can understand. The main problem I'm having with most guides is the MPQ stuff. Please help:sad: .

you will need to download this.
http://hiveworkshop.com/resources_new/tools/6/
that way you can get the skins.
once this downloded open it , you will see the "tree" it will be the box to the top.

you will see 3 bubbles. MDX BLP and local drives

click on the BLP

Than open the + on the tree

Those are all the skin's.

to save the skin from viewer. Right click the skin you want and extract it.

Than open it in gimp or photo shop.

when done save as TGA format.

reopen it in viwer and conver the TGA to BLP that option is on the top right of the menu

Than click on the MDX bubble on the "tree" find the model of the skin you redid.

Click current file on the top menue
than remape texture change the texture to the 1 you made and their ya go.

have fun in editing

You import the skin into WE, change the skin's path to that of the unit you want to replace, save, and reopen the map or change the texture settings. You can find pathes by opening the model and going up at the top to Current File>Show used texture names.

OK I imported it and changed the path name but it isn't working. The unit is a tauren and the skin name is TheUltimateTauren. I made the path Unit\Orc\Tauren\TheUltimateTauren.BLP is it wrong?

Your gonna need to extract the MDX file of the model. Do this with WC3 Viewer. Once youve extraced it you will want to change the name to something differant so you know what file your working on (this step is optional and is only required if you have extracted multiple instances of one model). Then you need yobgul's file converter (just google this or search the tools section. it cant be that hard to find). Once you have yobgul's open click the load file button, then select your file. Once you have your file open click the convert to MDL button, wait for a confirmation message saying successfully converted to mdl or something similar. Then open up notepad or any other text editing program you have. Find the file you just converted to mdl and open it. If you accidentally open the mdx version you will find a giant list of some strange text. If this happens you did not open your mdl file. When you click on a file to open, make sure its the mdl file. When you have it open, scroll down till you see a section that has alot of the word bitmap in it. Its not to far from the top. You should see a section that says Textures\units\TaurenSkin.blp or something similar. This is the skin that the model uses. You will want to change it to textures\unit\YourEditedSkinName.blp. Then copy textures\unit\YourEditedSkinName.blp and save what you have edited.
Now open up yobguls again and load your edited mdl file and click convert to mdx. when you have converted it just close yobguls and open WE. now open the model and skin in the import manager. Change the skin path to textures\unit\YourEditedSkinName.blp (the section you copied earlier) your model should be ready to use!
Also next time you run into an issue like this search some other sites under the tutorials section. There are tutorials explaining how to do everything from skinning to converting and importing your models EVERYWHERE!
Happy skinning!
