Im not familiar with system restore but there should be an option somewhere on your computer that allows you to scan for hardware. Try going to your control panel and clicking printers and other hardware, on the left of the box there is an add hardware option. Try clicking that and searching for Cd/DVD rom. Additionally if that doesnt work you can also click on the system link (found below the add hardware link) and get to your System Properties page. Then click the hardware tab. After that you can browse your current hardware using the device manager option, this will allow you to see if your DVD/CD rom are even being reckegnized by your computer. If they are not showing up then it is possible that they may be unplugged or even fried. You might also want to check if you have the proper software to reckegnize new hardware additions on your computer. (i believe for windows xp (or any other version of windows) comes standard with such a program). Either way, i hope this helps you.
