Unfortunately, "1" and "one" are both correct in the context of writing. But I believe the proper way to do it is to spell out the word as long as it's not something ridiculous, or, more so, to type out the the first number and then you are allowed to abbreviate the next ones with digits.

I was always taught that the first ten numbers should be written out as words: one, two, etc. But after that, you can use numbers, 11, 12, etc.

My teacher was from some other country, England I think.
