Obsidian/other crystal/stone textures?

I was just wondering how you make an obsidian or crystal like texture. I'm trying to reskin a footman into an Obsidian Knight, but I'm screwing up the texture.

I dont know about other programs but fireworks has some things called "assets" you can use and then you can play with them to get the desired look.. you can change the colours or use preset colours. Hop ethat helped!
