The best place to start I would say is in the tutorial section, and also mucking around with the world editor. A tower defense map can be a useful way to come to terms with upgrades, units and their respective stats/fields so on so forth. Many maps here only accept people who have experience rather than seeking it, so that's really all I can recommend.
