More Kobolds - Candle Priest

I'm leaving the disease hero in development hell for now; It's the only hero with finished mechanics but I'm not feeling inspired.

Another hero idea, which is probably more applicable to more people, is a High Priest of Candles.

I've developed a bit of a gist so far:

Placeholder head, I'll make a custom one and edit the body a bit more.

The bird is a play on the "canary in the coalmine". The idea was inspired by @Remixer in the Geomancer thread.

As per the unreadable drawing, I'm going for pipe organ reminiscent candles on the back, and the canary will leave the cage on a few animations (death, for example).
Fire theme otherwise, obviously.

Any other ideas/criticism etc. welcome.

Looking good. I wonder, how hard would it be to make staff's lantern shatter during death anim, and the bird flying out of it?
Current plan is one side swings open like a door, so bird can escape at death. Another one is a rare stand sequence where it gets out and he shoos it back in.
My current idea for his ultimate is a transformation, so the bird would escape in that case also.
If he transforms back though, I guess the bird should return?

Nicey. Would reckon some Medivh or some undead unit cloth texture instead of orc warlock to make it look more kobold like overall.
Yeah, fire theme. Could have a channeling stand animation when the back candles light up along with maybe the lamp staff.
More ragged? He is like the arch bishop of candles tho, so can I sneak a little colour in there, please?🙏 I'll check out medivh I forgot what he looks like.

This model reminded me of the stein123 model of his kobold magician :)

I actually like the scroll texture because of the gradient from top to bottom. I'll have to remember to add more of that in if I do custom candles.

I got half way through releasing the bird, but it was based on him stumbling (while standing still?) which didn't really make sense, and looked awkward. Like you're standing, minding your own business and suddenly twist your ankle for no reason....

So I'm gonna try making him release it deliberately. Then shoo it back in.
It doesn't really need to make a lot of sense, right?

What do you think of the cage-opening animations?

I'd say the death one is about 90% done. Just touch up the candle wobble and the crotch cloth maybe.
It's hard to see from that angle but the cage basically opens similar to the standing one before falling over.

I thought in the end the fairy would die (explode and disappear).
I have a question, does a fairy have a symbiosis with a kobold or a one-sided benefit?
If the former, then the fairy must die in the end.
If the latter, then the fairy should fly high up.

Originally they weren't friends, but I guess they are now :peasant-rolling-eyes:.
In my head this hero is more of a Good Guy than the other 3, so it makes a little more sense they are cooperative or symbiotic.

This is the dissipate so far:

I haven't tested it in game yet to see how the fade goes.

With my head-canon, kobold's candles kinda represent their souls in their religion, which is one of the reasons they don't want you taking them or putting them out. That makes this guy a sort of soul-keeper, but also encourages them to burn their brightest.

So what's the fairy/bird? I don't know I just thought it would be cool.

ED-

I tested it out, the death works really well imo, but the walk is strangely janky. Probably need to change the MoveSpeed of the sequence or something.

@deepstrasz, how many emitters do you think is too many?

atm he has 3 on his hand, 6 on his back, and needs at least one more for his head!
Is there any chance this many could cause issues for the engine, or potato PCs?
Should I consider replacing the backpack flames with billboarded glows that flicker?
When I looked at Firelord i believe he only had 2 emitters on his head, everything else was a glow.

Side thing, I'm working on a generic portrait for kobolds:

I should have it finished by the end of the week at the latest, and I'll upload it as a standalone.

It looks a bit more gnollish, but there's still room to... I dunno flatten but widen the nose etc. The eyes don't look as wide open outside of the of the T-pose.

This should kill a few birds with one stone, because I want to upload the candle priest with both a custom head, but also a default one (i.e. the one in this thread), so this portrait should suffice for the default version.
I'm also going to use it for my kobold workers, and it should be really useful for other models that use the default kobold head (there's quite a few in the models section) because most don't have portraits.
Because the standard geomancer skin is just a recolour, swapping them gives you a perfectly serviceable geomancer portrait, too.

Criminy, I wish I'd known you were making a series of topics like this; I love commenting on this kinda stuff. ^_^ (you should consider making it all in one thread so people can follow it. Or maybe have a single thread linking to all these individual threads?)

I'll try to have some actual comments later but 1) I'm loving that little magical bird-in-the-cage staff, very cute & clever, and 2) gold-sack arms! GOLD-SACK ARMS!

Yeah I think I should put most of the junk in one thread so I don't get tarred as a spammer :(
Then again, I have a few different things on the boil at once so it could get confusing if that thread covers unrelated stuff every other post?

And thanks about the bird, I'm really chuffed with how that's turned out.
It's just so funny how sometimes you put a fair bit of effort into something (like the disease kobold) but it refuses to work.

My first attempt with the generic portrait, I made a custom frame/mesh and the whole thing just refused to work, so I put that idea on the procrastination back burner. Then later something triggered me off thinking I could get inspired from skelly's head mesh (probably @DREADMAN's recent skelly variations) and so I thought hell with it, let's just batter that into the shape I want. Didn't even take long to get a good base to work with.

And the generic one came out pretty much exactly as I'd hoped, or better tbh lol.
Even after all that, the profile view of my custom and the skelly derived one looked incredibly similar, so I was left wondering exactly what I'd missed :/

I've been cleaning up little things like adding a tail and changing the scrolls to candles, but I'm getting sick of this model.
I might add another (more boring) Stand 3 and then call it done.
At least for the default version.

I feel like I'm missing something though.

Stand, Walk, Death, Dissipate, Spell, Spell channel, Attack... ?
