I use ps cs3 and one thing i can tell you for sure. Never let all the fancy brushes do the job for you, it will look way too simple. You did a very nice job with the fur and since you probably did the background just to have some, i'll let you slip away with it

I dont use any fancy brushes, only the default brush...

By fancy brushes, i referred to normal brush's tips such as grass, leaves, chalk etc etc.

and teh opacity changed pencil ^^ also some smudge and maybe a bit of pattern clone tool.

In case you haven't tried yet, i suggest you explore dual brushes. They enable marvelous color blends and textures.
