I remember playing around i with a system where you can take parts of units and place them on others, and stuff to create a custom model anyone know what i need to start making models?

You could look in the Tutorials section. There is plenty of information on "where to begin".

It would also be helpful if you got yourself a Model Viewer and/or a Model Editor.
