In-Game grid?

Has anyone done this? It'd be super-neat to have this. I'm not sure if there's a good way to do it while keeping the performance stable. The only way I can think of doing it is using a bunch of units with a grid-like model with the Locust ability. Maybe using Special Effects would have better performance? (Can't Special Effects be created for local players only too, without causing desync?)

sry I was a bit tired and forgot to say: In case of sfx you have to deal with orientation of these rays as well. You have to create several models oriented in x,y that way.
Using dummy units would be a way to only use one (size adjusted) model, but this could be cpu intense depending on your application.
