From http://stealth.strangecompany.org/

On Monday, July 7, 2008, a small group of MEPs within the EU is trying to sneak through a law to clamp down on file-sharing. If it gets passed, you could end up being disconnected from the Net for ever if your ISP decides you've been file-sharing.

You weren't supposed to know about this.

They buried these laws inside a huge package of other telecoms legislation, slipped it out the day before the EU breaks for the summer, and hoped nobody would notice. Most MEPs won't even have a chance to read this legislation before they have to vote on it.

Their stealth tactics could still work, unless we act now.

Right now.

Check out the site for more details.

It's legally imposible to introduce such a law by stealth. And if they do, firstly the ones who aproved this will be thrown out of the government and secondly the companies that are into this too will be on their way to court.
Furthermore, you can't be judged for something you did before it was considered a crime. And the most important of all: if they do this, 99% of the IP's will be banned: everyone has downloaded something in their life.
Even more, the Spanish constitution states that it is forbidden to share a copyrighted good if it's used to gain money, but if you do it for free, it's legal and the EU can's simply go and contradict a constitution of one of it's members.
In conclusion, this must be a joke (and these jokes make me mad) because someone who uses WoW machinima to movilise people to stop a legal process doesn't inspire me confidence...

My only way to aquire some good media is p2p...
Shit, even my WC3 is illegal ;_;

Edit
huh ? I just noticed one thing. If whole this shit is true, they will be tracking downloaders via their IP adress. So, if my IP is dynamic, am i safe ?

Wand Mirror - No, Rapidshare isn't P2P, so it's still legall ;]

Euh ok. Wtf, the music i download is actually ment to be payed for right? So how can it be legal, i mean if you download a game at rapidshare (20 parts of .rar files or so) to draw an example you think its legal too?

Let's not turn this into a thread discussing your pirated acomplishments. No one cares.

Isn't this thread about illegal download stuff? I just wanna know if it applies to that too. But if its only P2P then i actually don't care really. Enough music is downloadable true rapidshare, just search music blogs.

Ahhh, i said it the wrong way.
I meant, that if You use R-share, they won't be tracking You, because it is not P2P.

Besides - if i remember good, downloading music is not illegal. The law breaking starts, when You are spreading it.
Well, it looks that way in Poland, but this country is ages behind others =.='

No, don't be stupid.

It means file sharing, thus anything File Sharing related.

It's not about being a pirate, it's about stopping a law that, not only, intrudes on your privacy but also can get you perma-banned from the net without warning.

How can they actually tell if you are DLing something legal or not?

I could go get a torrent of a movie of a Tool assisted speedrun totally legally, but because I am torrentling will they ban me?

Also the whole BBC I player uses torrent type systems to work.

I purly think if you are downloading from select sites they will block you.

From a closer look, it seems that it will only trigger on low range connections like ADSL because it looks at volume of data transfered or number of connections. Someone like Ralle who is on fiber should not have to worry about this as fiber connections are specificly brought by people who need large transfer rates and so putting a clamp on it would be stupid.

What I basically think will happen is all connections which state you can DL X much per month will use this once you hit a percentage of the cap. This would act as a way for them to screw you to pay more for a faster connection. Basically, why should a ISP ban you if you are paying them? They will only do it to people who are costing them the most (largest DL rate) on low cost connections.

South Korea must be laughing at this law.
