I want to start moding

Ok i see all of theses mods and they are all cool, but i would rather make mine own then ask someone to make 1 for me. i have window xp in case you need to know
so i need basic information like:
• a good convertor
• a good program to editor the models
• anything else that all good moders should need.

i am going to read all the moding tutorials on this web site and also on others (many this 1).

but still i need some good tips and tools. i don't want crapy ones that will limit my moding.
