How to modify ".exe" (executable) file's icons?

I've tried Resouce Hacker, Resource Editor and PE Explorer to edit or modify ".exe" (executable files) but when I save the modified file, it seems to be corrupted... Is there a working tool or I have done it wrong?..

Lazy way:
Put EXE in a folder

Make shortcut to it

Change shortcut's icon.

Send me the exe, I'll do it with resource hacker, you must have done it wrong.
