How to make the image function this site have?

First I will point out im not sure where to post this. So maybe this isnt the right forum. Sorry if it isnt.

I am making a homepage for my mom, where she have pictures of all her cakes. Yes she bake alot of cakes. And then I want a picture function like the one on this site, where you click on it, and it pop up without opening a new site.

I know (or think) its made in php, but im not so good to php, so if anyone could link me to a tutorial or post a script that do it, it would be a great help.
