After answering a couple of people's questions about where to go for a custom avatar, I decided to make a post about it.

Upload it there, then copy the (Direct link to image)-URL to the clipboard.
Open your profile and click avatar
Once you do that paste the URL to the "Link to off-site Avatar".
It should work, as that is what I did.
