how to edit a custom model?

For removing a sword, I would suggest either MDLVis, Oinkerwinkle's Vertex Modifier, or Matrix Eater (as far as freeware goes):

It is as simple as selecting the vertices of the sword and pressing the delete button. It takes a little while to recognize which ones belong to the sword, but it isn't that bad. If they separated it as a geoset, then it is even easier because you can just hide the other geosets and delete the sword. Here is a tutorial on it (using oinkerwinkle's vertex modifier, but you can really use any of the ones I listed above):

Magos can possibly work, but if I recall correctly, there isn't an option to delete vertices. You would have to scale them down to a really low number (which would work, but it is not very good to have a bunch of useless vertices lying around).
