If you are playing Protoss and you see that you are going against a Zerg opponent, you want to start walling off immediately. That's not the same wall that you can see Terran players do, you use your Gateway and Cybernetics Core (or another Gateway) plus a Zealot to block incoming Zerglings. This is what you always need to do, if you are facing the zerg swarm. The Zealot can finish 6 Zerglings alone, if he is fighting them one-by-one. If you create a spot, where only one unit can pass, and you make your Zealot stand there and smash the Zerglings, you are good to go.

Variations of the Zergling rush:

There are different timed rush builds against a Protoss player. These are:
The 6 pool rush:
This is pretty much an all-in attempt to take out your units. The Zerg player will not get any Drones, but save up 200 minerals, put down a Spawning Pool and train 6 Zerglings to attack with. In some cases they draw some Drones to attack too.

What to do in this situation?

Stay calm and wait for him to come. If you scout him, the Spawning Pool will be like 75% ready when you get there and you'll be at around 11 capacity. Put down a Gateway to the ramp immediately, and try to wall in, like the picture shows. If he comes in with 6 Zerglings, you should be able to handle them. All you need to do is attack with the Probes, and make sure that you draw back the ones lost their shields. What you need to pay attention to is not to get surrounded one-by-one, but try to surround the attacking Zerglings. If you do it well, he'll be a lot behind in terms of economy, and you should have a Zealot chrono-boosted out from the Gateway to take care of other arriving lings.

The 8 pool Zergling rush:
It's like the 6 pool rush, but leaves the rusher a more viable economy. If you spot this build, you should be able to get a Zealot out when the attacking force arrives. Boost out a Zealot, and while you do so, use 1-2 Probes to block the entrance to your base (set them to hold position). If you do it right, the sacrificed Probes will buy you enough time to get the Zealot out and end the harassment. Set him to hold position at that spot you have.

All other builds including an early ling push should be easily countered by the Zealot you have at the choke point. Make sure you have one.

Other options:

There is an other option to defend against a Zergling rush, but it needs good scouting. You can try to set up a Forge instead of the Gateway and warp in a Cannon to defend your base. If you do this however, you have to make sure to prevent the Zerglings to run by your Cannon, so placing a a Probe in the choke is needed.

I don't recommend using Cannons, because it'll make your play Passive , and the opponent will have full map control. That's not something you want to allow.

I hope you get the idea about the counter of the Zergling rush. Scouting is a key to counter cheesy builds, so if you see a really early Spawning Pool and a low number of workers, you should start preparing for the arriving forces immediately.
