How to animate attachments ?

I don't think you can animate attachments done via the normal available methods...

You would need to make attachments as units or doodads to animate those... but then if you do, you would need to trigger other things like moving the "attachments" and such

or utilize the birth, stand and death animations as explained by Purge (forgot about that, been away from wc3 for too long)... :)

Sadly, you cannot animate attached special effects. They'll play their birth animation (if it exists) when they are created, followed by their stand animation. Once it is destroyed, it'll play its death animation.

However, you can use that knowledge to work around it. You can make one attachment with the regular stand animation, then make a copy that has the "attack" animation renamed to "stand" (and delete the original stand animation), etc. That way, you can just destroy the old attachment and add the new one. You may run into issues if you have a birth and death animation with your attachment, so you may need to import more models for that.

You can use MDLVis to delete and rename animations. If you need more help, feel free to ask. This method is useful for attachments with small file sizes. Deleting unnecessary animations will help too.
