How does global variables work?

Iv been wondering what happens if you use global variable as unit group and then assign another unit group to same variable.

Does it leak? Or does it automaticly remove the group that was stored in the variable in first place?

SC2 has a garbage collector. Unless the group is still referenced elsewhere it will be automatically destroyed and so not leak.
