How do I create a Glow-Effect?

Hello Modellers,
how do I create a Glowing-Effect?
In my case, I need a grey glowing on a sword.
Someone told me, I needed to make a plane. And at some other modelss I saw in Magos in the Node Manager something like "OmniLight", but I can't get it worked.
I'm using Milkshape 3D.

Please help me and tell me step by step how to do it.

take a look how blizzard added the glow to the weapons of their heroes.

I think with magos you can copy the geoset of a glow then attach it to your model.. there is a tutorial there for hero glow..
