Regarding shoutboxes may I beg to differ, bro Chriz. Most of the basic packages are free and, if hosted elsewhere, would require few resources.

A shoutbox might also help reduce the spam on the boards themselves, providing an outlet for users who tend to jump from board to board creating idiotic topics like this or just spam the actual threads by going way off topic.

Shoutmix appears to be a decent piece of software providing that it could be easily integrated into your PHP. However, I do fully realize that such a feature would just be one more thing for you guys to administer and maintain.
