So i've never actually played starcraft before and am now practicing with the starcraft 2 beta.

I am pretty aware of all those hotkeys you can use to select your units, for example with zerg pressing S to quik access your larvas and then D for Drones, Z for Zerglings, R for Roaches, H for Hydra's etc.

So now recently i was watching one of those beta game replays on youtube and noticed that the player mapped his buildings to the numbers on his keyboard and found out this can be done with CTRL+(Number) while selecting a building/unit/unitgroup.

Are there more of these combinations you can use?

You just found that out? You could find that on the back of your WC3 game manual.

Will you be able to set controls in SC2 ? I am not sure of that, but that would be very handy.

Starcraft 2 got an option that will let you make groups by right clicking on a specific symbol too.
That will put all of the currently selected units in a group the same way Ctrl+[number] does. ^^

Yeah, there are tabs above the center part of the interface.
Select a group and then right click an empty tab (or filled, in that case it replaces) and it assigns your selection to that group number, which can then be viewed by hitting a number on your keyboard (There are 10 tabs, for 1 through 0)

It'll also make a number appear there, and an image preview of the most common unit there, for sake of those who like hotkeys but can't remember what's in every single group.

Lol SC2 is not just for mapmaking, how can you imagine people to play vs each other without controls? It will be the new game added on tournaments, so ofc it will have all control functions war3 had and more.
