Here's a good way to maintain tension: Make an enemy invisible, and the only way to detect it is through the sounds it makes. So as your character moves on, hearing the noise get closer and closer... THEN it attacks, preferably from behind.

If it's a first-person view, even better.

Alternatively, only its footsteps are heard.

Hmm i might be able to do a first person Camera for you? Though i must admit, first person isn't that great in warcraft. The reaction time is limited therefore making a "tense game" hard because of the limited view of sight. I mean admit it, even in oblivion you had to use third person to really grasp the whole scene. Anyhow im getting off topic, if you would like a first person camera, i have been working on a camera that would allowed first or third person view as well as regular game camera. The third person is pretty good, first person is hard to grasp because people want to see the weapon in the hand, shield, etc and to do that, it requires the camera to be very close to the model which shows the insides of the face during attacks. First person without the hands, weapon, shield, etc. is very easy but you don't get the same feeling as if you saw them but it looks better.

hahas i think the 3rd person camera fits my game better :p
and my camera can eventually shift itself to 1st person if the area is too small

be wary with first person cameras though, the turning can be quite difficult to figure out haha. Click with the mouse can momentarily mess up the camera if the unit turns too fast and using the arrow keys can be tricky. But good luck in any case :p
If you want some feedback or help with the camera pm me. More then willing to help (seem to have a lot of free time when having no project xD)

The best way to create something horrifying in Warcraft is to have an up close and personal experience to the ghoulies or whatever you call them. 3rd person camera would do great since first person camera could cause War 3 to project stuffs to the slowest degree. And put some creepy and eerie sound set to keep things tense and finally enemies should be rarely encounter to prevent spoiling the horror and when they pop out you should insert a terrifying scream or shriek.

Good Luck on your project and don't give up....
