Hi can I have a beta key? Have been searching around for one for the past few days. Seems I got to know this game a bit late. Would really appreciate it if you can send me a key.

My email is [email protected]

Think he referred to the other people's e-mail. I could post them on any newsletter site f.ex. et voilà, spam.

I just read about DotA on Wikipedia 1 minute ago, and it stated that it influenced the creator of Heroes of Newerth, is it like DotA too...?

Essentially, HoN is DotA. With certain changes. Not all the heroes (and not all the items either, I think) are included, and a few original heroes have also been added. The graphics is, naturally, much better and in general the game is a lot smoother (won't go into detail about that). It's worthy of a stand-alone game, which just happens to say enough about a game based on a mod if you ask me.

Although it's really attractive, I don't think it's necessary to make these kinds of games, really just stealing the originality, I'd even prefer DotA...

I'd view it more like honouring the concept. If your mod is good enough someone wants to make an actual game about it (and even giving you credits), then that's a tribute to you - in exchange they earn money and publicity themselves. It's a cheap way to do it (making games, books and films based on other's work), but as long as credit is in place it's considered a tribute.
Just consider Lord of the Rings for example. I bet Peter Jackson and the studio (and the crew.. etc) made a lot more money than J.R.R.Tolkien (or his family).

DotA is becoming a franchise in which people find different ways of earning money on - or gaining publicity and popularity - and it's all for the better. None of it will ever beat the original because of nostalgia (unless you've started with something not the original, and then you'd probably never encounter it anyway).

There's nothing wrong with that. It's a perfectly legit way of making money, both financially and morally.

Peter Jackson made much more money than J.R.R Tolkien and the family because he's the one that worked on the movie. A concept alone can only earn you so much, putting in the initiative and actually making something out of it is much more rewarding, and all is how it should be.

IceFrog isn't making Heroes of Newerth, he isn't working on it at either (Not directly, at least). He made the original Allstars which popularized the series, and now others have the rights to make a better one.

But in the end it's them that's working on it, so they have every right to profit from their labor.

Oh and, IceFrog didn't make DotA. Therefore, it isn't his concept. IceFrog only popularized it with the "Allstars" release.

I never said it was anything wrong with it, on the contrary. Not sure if you quoted me to say anything against me or just subtly agreeing.

I'm perfectly aware IceFrog didn't make the original DotA, which is why I never referred to IceFrog, but merely DotA. Afaik Guinsoo and Eul (not sure who made it first or if they worked together) were before IceFrog, and he just took it over when they abandoned it.

One part you said I have to disagree on though:

I wouldn't say the book is a concept. Besides, J.R.R. Tolkien put in at least as much effort as Jackson, and a lot more time. Not saying Jackson shouldn't have made profit on it.

Ah, well in that case I'm all fine with it. ;)
