eh. i NEVER use smudge. it looks stupid imo.
i think ive figured it out, but a few tips could be useful

Check DeviantArt. People upload an image that is 1 complete tutorial (with pictures and text to explain). There are many of such tutorials for hair and they all have their own goal and style. Just think what you want your hair to look like and check for tutorials that have that kind of hair as result.
