I was wondering how the original DotA made the Troll Warlord flip his range (from melee to ranged, then vice versa). Please tell me how to do it.

Another possibility is to use an Orb ability to enable attack 2, and remove this ability when you want attack 1 again.
(attack 1 is melee, attack 2 is range)

This does not work in my expirience, if a unit with an orb ranged attack (even with a high range) gets the order to attack an enemy, it will allways walk up to the range of the range, set in the standart attack
