Well I have tried skinning before and even submited few skins, but I deleted them in name of justice cause they were almost just recolour or failed in another way. Now I tried to do almost 100% free hand work and here is the result! Tell me how I can improve this ugly thing :P (I know that I should not use burn and dodge, but I can't make any skins in other ways :/ )

I think the problem with those lava cracks, besides the problems previously suggested (i.e. shadows and highlights), is that you're using one straight colour; Yellow. Start with an orange as your base colour, go in darker on the outsides (with.. lets say red), and then a very bright point down the center (yellow). This will give you a nice glowing appearance.

Anyways, great skin. Just add some shadows and highlights and you'll get a nice final appearance.

Well it has been a while since I last time practiced skinning so don't get your hopes too high :P

Ok so what do you think about the lava thingy now? (I still don't get the whole highlight and shading crap >.<)
