Errors and Crashes caused by Memory

Hello, Hive. For quite some time now, I have been getting increasing reports of Warcraft 3 Crashes while playing my project (Sunken City). When I first started investigating the issue (~1 year ago), I found an extremely helpful thread that explains how to read Crash Logs that are automatically created in the Warcraft Folder upon a crash. At least some of them...

So, initially, after finding this thread, I learned how to fix crashes caused by abilities and their respective triggers, units and so on. I fixed several abilities and triggers that were causing problems. The reports got less, but from that point on, every time someone reported a crash and sent me his Crash Log, it no longer contained Object Editor Data that the Crash Log helps to find - the crashes were caused by something else.

Here is all the info I came up with.
  • Usually the error that comes up reads this: Not enough storage is available to process this command.
  • It doesn't always happen. There are games when everything is fine.
  • It could happen to anyone, at any time.
  • Sometimes it happens at specific areas.
  • Most of the time it's random though.
  • Sometimes it happens upon trying to load a saved game.

So, obviously, memory dump causes the crash (or something..). My triggering most certainly isn't perfect, not at all, but I have always tried my best to keep everything leakless, especially when it comes to periodic triggers or ones that are executed multiple times in the game. I am not trying to rule out memory leaks as the issue, but if there are leaks in the map, they are most likely in some small, one-time triggers. I keep trying to hunt them down whenever and wherever I can. Sunken City is a big project with 1093 Triggers and 945 Variables.

Does that make it more "optimal"? Does it save any memory? Because I have many, many triggers that use the same event, but are separated like the first 2 examples. Would merging help?

well if .cpp noted in crashlog it's hardcoded issue and it could be literally anything. it's unrelated to triggers but ingame objects instead. think of trees, units, imported models, sounds, etc. basically crash appears in the inner data, which is barely touchable by mapmaker.

i'd recommend you to revamp your objects, but don't expect anyone to say the reason directly

not really, as I said. well, last time I met this bug it was a side project.
There was a model, typical imported model, nothing wrong. It was used by some skill as aoe-effect or target effect, doesn't really matter. Thing is, as soon as map loading, 2-3s later game crases no matter what. Only when I removed target effect which linked to this model (I didn't remove model itself) game went just fine. No idea why, simply because.

So it could be literally anything. In my case ability has been never introduced into the map in these 2 seconds so no preload. You have no real way to find the reason. I could try to deleting things again and again, 'cause I always had 2-3s fatal. Here - no idea.

With 'revamp' I mean "re-check", those ones which been introduced before those issues started to happen.

SpasMaster, link you provided can be helpfull for some mappers, thanks, it's new for me also. For crash cause by imported models, yes, it's possible, I personaly had an issue with C-3PO model from Hive (model was approved but cause crash game & editor). Now this model is fixed but Ill not touch this anymore:D
If you can connect crashes with apperance of any imported effect/model it can be usefull to track down the reason. In my mapper's life I had 3 types of crashes: from null player, from bad edited morph-based ability, from imported model. Never had info "Not enough storage is available to process this command." but I suspect it *might* be optimalization issue. Reference to your examples I do not feel it is a proper way to optimalize your triggers. Just look what world editor do with your gui example trigger:

Some crashes can really be a bitch and be very hard to identify.
I remember someone told me about his map crashed after a special
doodad type was revealed of fog in a certain region. (or something similar :D)

Here I have no idea what caused the crash, but it really maybe is a corrupted model or something.
The bad thing is I don't know a really quick way of a testing procedure.

For crashes I would consult DSG, he maybe can exlcude something, but probably also not avoid testing for you.

For the triggers I agree with Zibi, I would not combine them, as they seem to be logical not connected.
Optimizations is good, but not for all costs.
Combining randomly code for some tiny optimizations is no good practicse.

Btw, Zibi, I believe that TriggerCondition also starts a new virtual thread,
just like TriggerAction does. But TriggerEvaluate seems to be faster than TriggerExecute.

It will make it less optimal and probably not save any memory worth mentioning.

Merging can help with performance, but you need to use a more advanced approach involving hashtable lookups to resolve the actions to run in O(1) complexity. It also can look better as you can still keep all the code separate to some extent.

The idea is that you use the raw code type of the ability as a parent key (may need custom script) and some constant key as a child and map it to its appropriate trigger to run. The condition then becomes if the hashtable has a handle entry for the triggering ability parent with constant same key child. The actions are then to run the trigger from the same hashtable entry as the condition. This approach is in theory the most optimum approach as you can have any number of abilities registered and they will all be resolved by a single trigger thread in O(1) complexity. The usual parallel event approach and your suggested approach both have O(n) complexity so will not scale very well. If it makes a difference depends, it certainly will if you have hundreds of such an event, but it will probably not if you have a dozen or so.

I am guessing both are out of memory errors? The other guys error message is localized to a foreign language so I do not know for sure.

Error logs as the result of some internal error are practically useless. It is not possible to tell anything from them as they give such a small snapshot of what is going on in the game.

Since this is an out of memory error I am guessing some infinite allocation loop. As such the point of crash is when it ran out of memory to allocate, rather than when the infinite loop started. In an assembly debugger you would have to traverse up the stack until you find the call that is looping infinitely. That will give you the cause of the crash.

After finding the cause of the crash you would have to find out why it is the cause. That would then lead you to how to fix it.

The obvious problem is that due to Warcraft III being closed source there is no way to get much meaning from the assembly code. As such you are left with nothing more than function call sites without knowing what they are for and where they sit in the big picture of things.

It is possible the fan submitted crash has something in common with a freeze I have been trying to solve. In some large tactical map players occasionally freeze. When they freeze it is because WC3 is doing "something" with 2 different ~20 Megabyte large blocks in an infinite loop. The code for these blocks seems to be the .\cmemblock.cpp file. Why 20 MB blocks are used I do not know, however if they were to be larger than 20 MB, eg 500 MB or 1,000 MB then it could easily cause an out of memory error. This is complete speculation however.

A good idea is to get the replays from sessions which crash. Robots save these quite well and also they can be obtained from your last Replay file. You can then test it offline with the debugger running. If the crash is not hardware related, then it should crash at the exact same point as it did when you were playing. This is where you can start debugging and finding out at least where the problem is starting.

Be warned that compiler built optimized assembly is a real pain to read. Be prepared to spend hours getting nowhere staring at instructions processing values from varying pieces of memory.
