DESCEND
Descend is a Singleplayer/Co-Op Roguelike dungeon crawler. It features randomly generated dungeon levels with a plethora of bosses, traps, and enemies to encounter. Choose from a pool of unique heroes and battle your way through to defeat the Lich!

Heroes
Descend offers a large array of fun and unique heroes to play, with the primary roles being bruisers, tanks, assassins, mages, and supports.

Tanks/Bruisers (Usually Strength)
Typically, in team-based gameplay, bruisers and tanks are heroes that are capable of self-sustaining and holding off enemies to make room for assassins and mages to nuke enemies down. As a result of these factors, Tanks/Bruisers often lack effective mobility, which makes it difficult for them to dodge attacks and escape from groups of enemies.

Assassins (Usually Agility)
Assassins are heroes who can deal high damage all while having a lot of escape options and mobility. As a downside, they typically have lower health and struggle earlier in the game.

Mages (Usually Intelligence)
Mages are heroes that excel at dealing massive damage at the expense of often limited mobility and a low health pool. Their damage is substantial early on, however later into the game, mages tend to be surpassed by the damage of assassins and some bruisers.

Supports (Any Attribute)
Supports are heroes that are responsible for providing unique assistance and utility to their team that falls outside of the responsibilities of regular heroes. Some support heroes can heal, provide mana, steal gold from enemies, grant their teammates invisibility, remove negative effects and more.

General Overview
Your goal in Descend is to traverse through randomly generated dungeon levels and defeat bosses to progress to new areas. Defeating a boss provides a new merchant, which you are able to trade with whenever you come across a merchant room. Your hero can be customized in a wide variety of ways, to accommodate for weaknesses, amplify strengths, or to completely redefine your hero's playstyle.

While there is plenty of rooms filled with enemies and minibosses for combat, many rooms also require problem solving and key decision making in order to be passed through effectively. You may come across a demonic ritual, an offer from a spirit, a cheeky troll, a sleeping ogre, and so much more!

GAME
Content ---

  • Added 4 new Tome options to the Shade Room.
  • Added Small Burrows which provide some loot. Smaller heroes are more likely to acquire loot.
  • Added the Chaotic Blessing event which provides permanent bonuses after defeating a challenge.
  • Added Bone Altar's which buff enemies.
  • Added unique abilities and effects to the following enemies on Hardcore/Nightmare difficulty: Yoggy, Skeletal Mage, Skeletal Warlord, Greater Demon, Lava Golem, Yeti, Frost Revenant, Daughter of Osiris, Dark Wizard
  • The Ice Dungeon levels now have a unique environmental object, Critter Eggs. Destroying them allows you to obtain Cold Critters which are a unique currency used to trade with the new trader, 'Bug'. Bug offers unique items and permanent bonuses in exchange for cold critters.
  • Added new items: Booming Buckler, Underling Banner, Spidersilk Shoes, Mandibles, Artifact of Corruption, Tony's Other Hat, Mantis Wings, Scaled Spellbook, Anchor, Drowned Plate.
  • Added a new dedicated recipe trader, 'Pete'.
  • Added a new Agility Mage, Runtington, the Outcast Runt (he was already in the game but had no abilities, he is still obtained the same way, as a small chance to be randomed. Unless...)
  • Added a new Intelligence Mage, Gilagorph, the Conduit. Can only be unlocked on Hardcore or Nightmare difficulty.
  • Added Path of the Noble.
  • Added Mana Mephits to the Crystal Tree room which drain your mana, but when killed grant mana back.
  • There is now a reward for beating the Lich on Nightmare Difficulty.
  • Reworked Nightmare Mode: no longer prevents you from gaining lives, instead: Lives can be gained but you start with 0 and bosses give you 0. Enemy damage increased by 45% and resistance increased by 30%.
  • Added a new event in the last area, the Voidborn Apocalypse.
  • Added some new Achievements.
  • Added a few more secrets.
  • Added new special Sunken Chests to the Subterranean Sea in the final zone which can be unlocked with ember keys.

Performance ---
  • Done further massive optimisations across the board for various general triggers which had some outliers (missing position variable clears, group deletion etc)
  • Hero specific optimisations have been made for Rock Golem, Orc Raider, and Woodland Wizard.
Bug Fixes ---
  • Icy safes no longer spawn their contents far away.
  • Tome of Wizards now correctly grants 175 health.
  • Having an undroppable item forced upon you by Sludge, Helmet of Peter Roll, Unusable Item Slot etc. will no longer drop paths or blood orbs.
  • Fixed a bug causing Callus' Blighted Bile ability to play a horrible noise.
  • Path of the Necromancer now activates simply when activating an ultimate ability with a 30 second cooldown at minimum. There is no cooldown in this effect occurring, other than that which is naturally imposed by the ultimate ability restriction. Hopefully this logic is more recognisable to Reforged than the previous logic.
  • Void Wolf boss portals no longer are retained if the boss is killed when casting the ability.
  • Added another check for a Defeat screen to occur to prevent loss screens occurring when you had lives/players still alive.
  • Ring of Giant's now correctly gives 15 Strength as per the tooltip.
  • Rhan no longer pushes/pulls you after killing him.
  • Fixed a bug causing Priest of Havoc to continuously gain Wraith Charges, making his damage output far too high.
  • Fixed some incorrect tooltips.
  • Restructured how damage resistance is calculated in the map to improve performance.
  • Fixed a rare bug causing the Storm Lord's energy sap to one shot enemies.
  • Fixed a bug causing Ursadeius' roar to heal without the Ability Artifact acquired.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the Lich's push attack to push you outside the map.
  • Fixed an oversight causing players who purchase paths before player 1 has selected 'Turbo' mode not getting the charges reduced from 17 to 12.
  • Fixed a bug which would cause Death's Promise stat gains to appear in the world if a hero holding one was fully dead.
  • Fixed a damage calculation disparity for the Void Zone between Classic and Reforged attack indexes.
  • Wolfheart Skullcrusher's spinning blade damage has been fixed for Reforged (wasn't calculating the base damage multiplier correctly).
Tweaks ---
  • Armoured Skeletons armour increased from 30 to 40.
  • Lump and Goosy no longer break crates when charging.
  • Death's Promise cost reduced from 2250 to 2000.
  • Path of the Chosen damage resistance and amplification decreased from 10% to 7%. Base attack time reduction reduced from 0.15 to 0.1.
  • Death's Promise cost decreased from 2250 to 1700.
  • Gold dropped from enemies now scales depending on player count. (1 player - 85% gold, 2 player - 100% gold, 3 player - 115% gold, 4 player - 130% gold)
  • Starting gold based upon having 1-4 players has been changed from 800/400/200/100 for 1-player->4-player to 800/450/350/250.
  • Added dash protection to Fishbones' Slip 'n Slide, preventing melee enemies from damaging the dashing hero as they begin the dash and create a large enough distance between them and the enemy by the time the attack concludes.
  • Player 1 can now type '-togglepool' to turn off/on the '-pool' command.
  • Lump and Goosey ultimate sound volume has been reduced.
  • Stalker Eye no longer gives True Sight.
  • Rhan's tentacle auras damage less frequently to prevent lag.
  • Infernal Robes burn damage reduced from 12% of maximum mana to 9%.
  • Tome of Bribary now grants 2x your health in gold.
  • Star Knight effects updated.
  • Star Knight Falling Star is now leakless and no longer uses shockwave as a base ability.
  • Added checks for edge cases where you could gain negative maximum health and mana based upon max health/mana reductions against heroes that had negative base values of health/mana. Now these values cannot fall below 1.
  • Rogue Daggers crit damage reduced from 3x to 2.25x.
  • Legendary Poker ring crit chance reduced from 6.5% to 5%.
  • On Hardcore/Nightmare, the Skeleton Wave room now has Bone Altar's in each corner of the map.
  • Reduced Ice Troll Berserker base attack time from 0.75 seconds to 0.6 seconds.
  • Path of Priest now causes abilities to heal a random ally.
  • Rebalanced Boss health based upon player count as it was easier to kill bosses solo.
  • Nightmare mode is now a selectable difficulty option.
  • Rock Golem hero renamed from Borkas to 'The Boulder'.
  • There is now a slight visual indicator for when Rubble Armour is about to end.
  • The Shifter's Bear Spirit damage is now directly applied to his base damage rather than added after an attack is dealt.
  • Woodland Wizard ultimate no longer hits passive units.
  • Troll/Murloc fleeing room upon death now drops gold in bigger amounts but less units (spam right clicking was getting old).
  • Sheep Mask stats increased from 4 to all stats to 5, and now will continuously taunt the area, to account for overriding taunting abilities.
  • Fixed various tooltip typos, incorrect labels for buffs, etc.
  • Oxyotl cleave now causes enemies who land to remove terrain, preventing them from getting stuck.

HEROES

Atlas, the Thunderhog

  • Discharge cooldown reduced from 2 seconds to 0.25 seconds.
Styx, the Herald of Death
  • Reaper health bonus provided reduced from 250/330/410 to 200/250/300.
Animal, the Beast of Rage
  • Reworked Beast Smash to not use Impale and instead stun enemies in an area and knock them away.
Lachlann, the Vagabond
  • Shield Charge and Kick now destroy terrain in the movement path to prevent yourself and enemies from getting stuck.
  • Claymore cleave area increased by approximately 60%.
  • Claymore stance bonus damage reduced from 60% of Strength to 45%.
Seranox, the Sunscale Paladin
  • Changed the hero model to a new model by Gluma.
  • Reworked abilities slightly to accommodate for the new appearance.
Simon, the Warrior of Ironforge
  • Added an active to Dwarven Grudge: sacrifice 25% maximum health to cause the next attack to deal 250/500/750 extra damage, and then explode, dealing Attack Damage + 250/500/750 to all nearby enemies and hurling them in the air.
Malkarion, the Star Knight
  • Intelligence gain increased from 1.2 to 2.
  • Agility gain increased from 1.6 to 2.2.
  • Base cast point reduced from 0.4 to 0.3.

Been playing this for along time, so yeah... really love the game. I also love the fact that this is constantly being updated and stays non-reforge.

Also, I encounter a bug.
Hero: Vegabond
Issue: I can't use my "no mana cost" skills, also can't pick up power-ups because it says "not enough mana"...... which is weird.
Likely cause:
1. I picked up the Ghost Tome where I gain 10 strength while losing 10 int (which in this case, all of my mana).
2. I have the Path which has a debuff of INCREASING the mana cost by 20. My abilities still doesn't cost mana but it takes mana. Yet I can still use them despite having 0/100 mana.
3. I have no mana.... not even an initial mana that doesn't include the mana given by my own int. So losing all my int basically erases the mana bar.

Hey there, thanks for the awesome feedback and it's so nice to hear you're enjoying the map!

This issue looks like an oversight on my part in the path consuming extra mana on abilities that have no inherit manacost, I'll fix this up. Tomes that reduce stats also should have a minimum margin of 1 so I'll check that this is working as intended also.

Hi.

First of all, I want to express my sincere gratitude for such a great map.

The lag is however unbearable after reaching the "ice" biomes. I have a really good computer, I've never had issues like this before unless there were over 1000 units in other custom games. We beat the final boss, not due to skill, but due to pooling enough lives together on Alistair for him to outdps standing still when wc3 was frozen on his side.

For clarification.
I havem the following specs:
Ryzen 7 5800X3D
RTX 4080
128 GB of DDR4 3200 MHz RAM
Kingston FURY Renegade M.2 2280 SSD 4TB

What I'm trying to say with posting my specs is, I should be more than meeting the recommended requirements for this custom map. However it still has fps freezes. The ice rune boss is especially terrible with the multiple blue circle spell.


I would love to be able to continue to play this, it's such a good map, but having the lag be the final boss, isn't as fun as you would think. :D

Hi Slothic,

Many thanks for your appreciation of the map, and apologies regarding the lag. Despite several major patches to combat this issue, it seems to be an ongoing problem with Warcraft Reforged.

Vladd developed the map on the Classic game version v1.29.2 and that's where we have playtested it right from the first version. It appears to run significantly better on Classic than it does on Reforged, even if using classic graphics mode. I'm not sure how Blizzard managed to make a remaster that runs notably worse than a 2003 game capped at 2GB RAM usage, but here we are. It's quite impressive really.

If you would like to visit the Discord for this map, we have put together some tutorials for improving performance on Reforged (where able), or for optimal experience, there are also tutorials on how to setup and run Classic Warcraft, including some multiplayer options.

Vladd is currently focusing development on navigating issues presented by Reforged, and will hopefully be able to make some progress, but ultimately it's up to Blizzard to optimize their game and stop negatively impacting custom maps with broken patches.

Hey, did you ever make it so summons are able to teleport next to you in the next room? If you haven't, please can you make it?
