Damage Reduction Buff/Effect Problem

I'm making a Role Playing map in which the characters carry different weapons. I want to make it so when a character isn't carrying a weapon (eg. a certain item) , the character is under a damage reduction effect since it's weaponless. how would I go about doing that? I've made a triggering system to allow the player to have only one item in each hand, and figured out how to attach animations to the items, but I can't seem to figure this out.

I figured it out with out a DDS. I just made a custom ability based off of the neutral hostile version of critical strike called No Weapon. The characters get it when they aren't holding a weapon. basically it hits 100% of the time and it multiplies the damage by 0.5. it works quite well. :wink:
