You could try Windows Movie maker, which is pretty easy to use but has somewhat limited options.
Or, you can use Windows Media Encoder:

It's harder to use, but you have more options.

I was planning on mentioning that my problem was solved shortly after asking the question...
I was just worried about the programs I could find on google... after the amount of viruses I've gotten on my old computer, I can't be too careful.
Thanks again to those of you who gave good answers, and a "thumbs down" to Xarwin for chastising me in such a rude way.

FormatFactory is quite easy once you get the hang of it.
It supports the well known and overused formats including AVI and premade preferences to make it compatible with PSP/iPod/iTouch/BlackBerry/Phone.
One of the best things about it is that you can rip DVDs and while in that process, it converts itself to a selected format.
It is also updated frequently, just got a new update a month ago and its not a useless update.
