channeling at a destructible

my map has some rocks. I'd like to make a channeled item that targets rocks.

I tried it with channel and got a weird result where the channeling ends immediately. aerial shackles, same result. the game apparently has something against this behavior.

I could make some kind of pseudo channel where for example the unit is give a different ability and ordered to cast it but I can't think of a way to do that that wouldn't reset the order queue.

any ideas?
