What is the channel ability and what is it for?

It's one of the most useful abilities you have.

Good for use as a dummy spell to trigger another spell because you are able to change the base order ID to stop conflicts that arise when one unit has 2 of the same abilities.

Its either for cinematic or for triggered spells. By itself, it does basically nothing other then showing the unit is channeling.
