Also with the select thing, Ive only ever been able to get into select mode by doing stuff in the object editor. Is there an easier way to enter it?

Press D while in the editor and have no pallete opend. You will enter the doodad pallete automaticly. Now click on the dood which you wish to remove and press the delete button. You can also click multiply doodads by draging your mouse into a square with the doodads within you want to select. When selected also just press delete.
