Can I patch the game?

My cousin bought WC 3 a few years ago and gave it to me on a Flashdrive.

Can I patch it and play online or should I wait for WC3 Reforged?

You may patch it and play now. You will be able to play it online if you own a valid CD key.
When Reforged is out, you should be able to play Warcraft III with or without it, it shouldn't matter much except for the graphics upgrade. As I understand it, people with the old game will still be able to play online with people who have Reforged.
