The wand needs to stand out of the background more. Try defining the shape as well, as it looks like a wooden sword.

At the current state, this does only remind me of a wand because of the shape, what this really needs is definition, trying to get a wooden feeling to it, maybe some extras and details aswell. Alpharez is right aswell, it needs to stand out more.
THere is a long way to go, but you can do it

I dont really like this, it looks like a wooden sword. It should have a clear grip, maybe some decoration, etc.

you should draw some parallel lines (with a darker colour than the wood) through the wand.

It would be nice if it can be surrounded by a light glow, or with energy that looks like a snake wrapped around the wand. Purple is too dark, for me.

It's not nice to see when a part of the icon is black, with rare exceptions. It is simple AND nice, which is a rare case. Try to make glow fade in the background more, and then use the dodge tool around the wand's background to make it look glowish.

Great work you've done here
Its a little hard to see what it is but i know it's very hard to make a thin wand look clearly in 64x64 pixel size. Maybe you could add a little stronger highlight on the bright side just to make it more visible. Also i don't think the background is symmetrical according to the wands positioning.
