The flames themselves is quite stiff, make the flames moving kinda like this icon for example.
The middle of the flames are good in my oppion, its just the flame edges themselves are bothering me.

It blends too much at the BG for me. I suggest plain black background and also give more light as what Ugo said.

There is a plain black background, it's just getting covered by the outer glow layer effect. I'll fix the size.

Yes, fix the size the glow covers too much of the BG that the BG is not noticeable.

The glow color is kinda wrong IMO. Take a look again at example icon that The_Panda given, but now study how the glow looks like. The glow color should be much dimmer.

Well, then you should make the space that the fire consumes lower to add a proper glow still maintaining black BG because the flame almost consumes most of space.

Also make the edges of the flame sharp by using maybe Smudge tool.

I have used the smudge tool, but only to make it more swirly. I can't reduce the size of the fireball now, so I'll just stick to what UgoUgo said.

And I don't think people might notice if the BG is a little covered, especially since it's only of one color.

But I do think it makes it quite sharp too when used properly.

I use the Smudge tool properly, just for a different cause. I don't want the edges to become sharp, I want it to spread and swirl.

There is the phrase "too much" but that is up to you if you continue making things like this. All I can suggest is that you fix the transition between the fire and the black background.

I wouldn't say they're that stiff. Just add more contrast (from dark red/orange to white 255 255 255) and add some sparks and such. Also, increase the blackness in the background. It's a bit.. too. Hm. Colorful? I don't know

It's really good actually, I love it. The main problem is that the orange is too much. just increase the background black color and make the orange a bit.. less and it will be even more awesome xD!

I don't get in which angle is it being fired at, but it hardly matters in game.
