Pyramidhe@d, I don't see why do you require him to use a background for approval? It is completely the icon maker's personal decision whether to include a background or not, most basic items in Warcraft 3 have no background at all. I think it looks great without a background. Backgrounds should be mainly used for magical, powerful or enchanted weapons, in my opinion.

I think it looks great and, like debode said, the background thingie is just a Hive-flew; a WarCraft III item is without background by default, and I personally like it better if every icon in my map follows the same templet (items with no background, for example).
